Cat ManicureClipping Cat Claws

I begin each grooming session by clipping the cat's nails.

Invest in a good pair of nail clippers specifically made for clipping the nails of cats (human nail clippers will crush the claw rather than cutting it).

Always clip nails under good light so that you can differentiate between the nail and the pink "quick." The quick will bleed if you cut it and cause pain to the cat.

Hold the cat, take a paw in your hand and gently press the pad to extend the nails. Look at the nail from the side to see the quick. If you look at the bottom, you will see dirt that is under the nail and may misjudge how much is to be cut.

Cut the nail below the quick as short as you can. Repeat on all nails.

Keeping the nails trimmed regularly reduces or eliminates the cat's need to use furniture to sharpen them and eliminates injury from a cat who may scratch you.
